UBC Safety & Risk Services
In her role, Sanjana conducted community engagement events to spread awareness of emergency readiness and personal preparedness. She supported the Emergency Management Team through the recruitment of and communication with external stakeholders to support community engagement events. Her duties also included supporting the review and maintenance of UBC’s extensive emergency management and business continuity plan library. Furthermore, Sanjana identified the need for a psychological preparedness plan, which then she researched and integrated into the university-wide preparedness material.
Academic Knowledge in Action
Through Sanjana’s co-op experiences, she was able to pair and expand her academic knowledge with practical application and engage with individuals living with mental health conditions. At Sun Life, her firsthand experiences with clients enabled her to apply her psychology insights, which led to her manager entrusting her with a significant portion of mental health claims.
At UBC Safety and Risk Services, Sanjana applied a psychological wellness perspective when evaluating the institution’s management and business continuity plans. Both her work terms have strengthened and guided Sanjana’s career decision in clinical psychology, where she discovered her true passion lies in direct client interactions within the mental health field.
Personal and Professional Skills
Sanjana’s co-op terms were transformative, not only fostering professional growth but also developing her personal skills. By being able to immerse herself in different workplace environments, her confidence grew by adapting to the different expectations and dynamics in each professional setting.
The professional skills that Sanjana established also contributed to her confidence in her abilities. Co-op equipped Sanjana with soft skills such as communication from regular interactions with teams, clients, and external stakeholders, and multi-tasking with different projects. Sanjana also developed a diverse range of hard skills, such as event planning and graphic design. Sanjana believes that co-op has given her a foundation to serve her future career endeavours.
