We asked Keith Lai, UBC Arts Co-op alumnus, to share his job search tips for co-op students.
During his undergraduate journey, Keith held co-op roles at the Port of Vancouver, Vancouver Airport Authority, and Innovation, Science, and Economic Development Canada. Post graduation, he has been applying his expertise as a Communications Consultant at Fraser Health Authority.
Keith’s journey through the co-op program and his experience reviewing applications as an employer provide invaluable insights to stand out as an Arts co-op student.
Q: What qualities do you look for in co-op students?
During the recruitment process, we seek individuals who demonstrate a strong work ethic, adaptability and a willingness to learn. Additionally, we value candidates who possess effective communication skills, problem-solving abilities and a collaborative mindset. A proactive attitude, enthusiasm for the role, and a genuine interest in the industry or field of work are also highly desirable traits.
Q: How are communication skills assessed during the interview?
This includes evaluating their ability to articulate ideas clearly and concisely, actively listen to questions and provide thoughtful responses. We may also observe their non-verbal communication cues, such as body language and eye contact, to gauge their level of confidence and engagement. Additionally, we may ask situational or behavioral questions to assess their communication style, problem-solving abilities and interpersonal skills in different scenarios.
Q: What advice do you have for students starting their co-op work term?
For students starting their co-op work term, my advice would be to approach the experience with an open mind and a willingness to learn. Take initiative, ask questions and seek feedback to continuously improve. Build relationships with your colleagues, network within the organization and make the most of every opportunity to gain hands-on experience. Remember to set quantifiable goals, stay organized and maintain a positive attitude throughout the term.
Most importantly, embrace challenges as opportunities for growth and don’t hesitate to seek support when needed.
