Amber Dukart
2015 Undergraduate Student of the Year – Honourable Mention
Major: Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus in Asian Studies
Program AssistantAmber Dukart received an honourable mention for the 2015 Arts Co-op Undergraduate Student of the Year Award. Amber was recognized for her work term at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden as the Program Assistant who, among other things, coordinated the Enchanted Evenings Concert Series. Amber’s supervisor said that under her leadership, professionalism and customer service levels greatly increased at the Garden.
Excellence in the Workplace
During her time at the Garden, Amber had many responsibilities including the logistical planning and coordination of cultural events, recordkeeping, running the box office, recruiting, training and scheduling summer volunteers, and leading 45 minute interpretive tours around the Garden. Amber’s supervisor noted that she went above and beyond expectations by utilizing her education in Asian Studies, speaking Mandarin (which was a highlight of Calligrapher Don Wong’s trip to the Garden), and undertaking an accounting project for the concert series, providing helpful data for future events.
Amber has contributed to the Arts Co-op Program by writing a review of the program for the Ubyssey, UBC’s student newspaper, in September. She also provided support for prospective students during her work term at the UBC Centre for Student Involvement and Careers, and answered questions during networking lunches at Arts Co-op pre-employment conferences.
Amber noted that before her position at the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden Society, she thought she “was set on a career path in education or social work on the front line at a non-profit.” As the Program Assistant, Amber was able to explore her strengths through a different and unexpected professional avenue, and she discovered new professional possibilities. Amber now realizes that she enjoys communicating with people, a skill her Program Assistant position, teaching, and social work all share. “I now recognize that whatever kind of career I find myself in, having a direct connection with people and performing work that builds capacity in others or provides a service is crucial to my success,” noted Amber. She is excited to continue learning and growing her skills through her coursework and her final co-op term.
