Caitlin demonstrated remarkable accomplishments, such as designing various graphic and motion graphic materials for national and regional distribution and producing video interviews of senior management for distribution in the internal staff newsletter. Furthermore, she created daily media monitoring reports for the Regional Emergency Co-ordination Centre, which helped to inform disaster response. Caitlin’s contributions extended to national advertising campaigns for the Federal Ocean’s Protections Plan and supporting large-scale events and ministerial visits.
Connections Between Work & Studies
As a Psychology major, Caitlin initially questioned the relevance of a communications role to her studies. However, she soon realized that her research skills and grasp of how media impacts the human psyche were remarkably applicable at Transport Canada. In her role, Caitlin effectively translated academic knowledge into practical applications through research, writing, and creative projects. This experience has not only deepened her understanding of the connection between work and academics but also steered her towards a desire for more communications positions in future co-op terms and post-graduation, recognizing the valuable connection between her academic background and professional aspirations.

Participating in the Arts Co-op Program has been a pivotal stepping stone for Caitlin’s future career. Her work term at Transport Canada has allowed her to build a strong portfolio of design work. Equally important, she has established a diverse network of career-driven UBC Arts students through co-op networking conferences. The program has also nurtured her confidence in job interviews, offering a secure space to practice and refine her skills. Looking beyond graduation, the skills, connections, and portfolio she has developed through the Arts Co-op Program are invaluable assets that will undoubtedly position her ahead in the competitive job market, providing a solid foundation for a successful career in communications.
