Where did Cheska work?
Work Term: Information Architect, Ericsson
What did Cheska accomplish?
Major Accomplishments
As Information Architect at Ericsson, Cheska played a major role in a project to help the company migrate onto a new platform for writing, organizing and publishing their technical documentation. On top of directly applying what she’d learned from her classes to assist with designing a new corporate information model, she became a subject matter expert on the platform in the later stages of her co-op term. Since the platform was also a new tool to all of her colleagues, her technical knowledge allowed her to become the go-to-person for any relevant technical questions. In Cheska’s words, these responsibilities “gave me a lot of confidence later on, when I decided to pursue a career in the tech industry.”
Other Memorable Experiences
As the documentation migration project involved teams based in different countries, Cheska got the opportunity to work remotely with people based in the United States, Sweden and India. This experience came in useful when she needed to transition to working remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Where is Cheska now and how did Arts Co-op get her there?
Currently, Cheska is working as Staff Engineer at a fintech company called Clearco. She credits her co-op experiences for helping her advance in her career journey. Before she began the MLIS program at UBC, Cheska had not been certain of the career path she wanted to take. Nevertheless, she was interested in exploring three different roles: UX Designer, Information Architect and Software Developer. Working as an Information Architect at Ericsson allowed her to not only explore her career interests, but also gain experience in a field that would have otherwise been more challenging to acquire from personal side projects. Moreover, she was able to transfer some of the skills she developed during her co-op term to positions taken on after graduation. Finally, as an international student who had no prior experience working in Canada, Cheska’s time at Ericsson allowed her to expand her network of professional contacts. In fact, she believes that a recommendation letter from her co-op supervisor significantly contributed to landing her first full-time job after graduation.
