Work Term 2 (4 months):
Digital Content Writer for Arrive (RBC Ventures)
What did Emily accomplish?
Main Tasks
Emily’s main task is writing articles for the Arrive website, which is a platform that helps newcomers access information and assistance when transitioning to Canada. Her articles vary across topics targeted towards newcomers’ needs, such as how transportation works in bigger cities, how to get a driver’s license, or how international students can find housing. Aside from this task, Emily provides general marketing support for Arrive, such as supporting live webinars on various topics related to immigration.
Major Accomplishment
Emily was most proud of her provincial spotlight articles – a project that detailed what newcomers need to know about every province and territory in Canada. The articles were compiled into a 30-page guide, which became an important piece of lead-generation content for the Arrive website.
What challenges did Emily overcome?
Emily’s role as a digital content writer was fairly independent to begin with, and when she joined the Arrive, the team had just started to work remotely due to COVID-19. “Arrive has a start-up feel inside RBC Ventures, so it was confusing at first because there were so many different levels in the company.” Emily had a hard time figuring out who was directly responsible for different people within the company. However, she managed to overcome this challenge by utilizing communication platforms like Slack and Zoom to ask more questions when she needed help.
How did Arts Co-op Benefit Emily?
Link between Academics and Work
“My position within RBC is quite unique because it is not related to banking at all, but rather it is completely writing,” Emily stated. As an English major, Emily’s role at Arrive is similar to her academic studies, as she is writing articles for specific deadlines. “This position has helped me grow both professionally and academically, as I have learned to quickly research and write professional articles and improve my skills.”
Preparation for Post-Graduation
“I feel more prepared for post-graduation as I have been able to have more exposure to other professional fields within RBC through this position,” Emily said. She has used her position to make connections and learn more about her interest in environmental studies, by talking to RBC colleagues who work in environmental and social governance. “I participated in a few office hours, where I got to talk to higher-level individuals at RBC and learn about a lot of jobs that I did not know existed before.”
What is Emily’s favourite part of Arts Co-op?
“My favourite part of the Arts Co-op Program is definitely growing my network.” Emily was able to start building her professional network, and now has an entire network of RBC employees that will keep her in touch with opportunities in various fields such as marketing, communications, finance, and corporate social responsibility.
