Work term 2 (8 months): Arts Career Initiatives Research Assistant, UBC Arts Co-op Program
What did Jasmine accomplish?
Service Canada Centre for Youth
As a Media Relations Officer at Service Canada Centre for Youth, Jasmine worked in a small team to promote the Service Canada Centres for Youth program for their eight offices located across the lower mainland. While working on the Centre’s media relations in print, radio, and television, she communicated and consulted with regional headquarters and local supervisors about the Centre’s communication methods and materials. In doing so, Jasmine found a new passion in communications, developing programming and event planning. She also built her communication, organization, and teamwork skills, a toolkit of skills which enabled her to rise above the competition and secure her next co-op position working with the UBC Arts Co-op Program.
Arts Co-op Program
Jasmine’s most memorable co-op experience was at the Arts Co-op Office where she worked as a Research Assistant. In this role, Jasmine gained more experience in event coordination and planning. Some of her accomplishments include facilitating the Arts Co-op intake process, providing training and advising for co-op students, and organizing ‘Work your BA’ workshops and Arts Tri-Mentoring events. In collaboration with four other students, Jasmine also redesigned and co-presented a resume and cover letter workshop for new co-op students—a workshop still given at Arts Co-op pre-employment training conferences today. Jasmine’s position at the Arts Co-op Office allowed her to survey many different types of work and confirmed her interests and skills in event planning.
What would Jasmine tell others about Arts Co-op?
Jasmine says the Arts Co-op program was “an opportunity gold mine.” She stumbled upon her passion through exploring different co-op opportunities and advises students to try different opportunities; she points out that in order to know what you want to do, “you really have to try it.” Jasmine also credits her co-op experience for helping her form a “strong network of contacts.” Through her involvement, she met different UBC staff members and improved her understanding of the job possibilities at UBC.
How did Arts Co-op benefit Jasmine?
Uncovering True Passions
During her term with the Arts Co-op Program, Jasmine uncovered a passion for student programming that shaped the rest of her university experience and influenced her professional career thus far. Her passions include “working with people, developing programming, and planning events,” all of which she had the chance to test out through her co-op terms. When asked to summarize one of the benefits of the program, she states that “Overall, the Arts Co-op program has enhanced my knowledge about the labour market and where I see myself fitting in.” This knowledge helped propel Jasmine towards her current position as a Student Development Coordinator with the UBC Centre for Student Involvement and Careers, where she gets to live out her passions every day. Jasmine will be pursuing her Masters of Education this fall, which will help transform her career and create more opportunities for her to positively impact student learning.
