Jennette Chalcraft
Congratulations to Jennette Chalcraft, our MAS Co-op Student of the Year for 2017! Jennette has been recognized for impressive work term at Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), and for her substantial engagements in the library community at UBC and beyond.
Each year, the Arts Co-op Program recognizes a UBC iSchool (SLAIS) Master of Archival Studies (MAS) or dual MAS/MLIS co-op student for outstanding achievement in all aspects of student performance, including academics, the workplace, contribution to co-operative education, and extra-curricular activities. The winner for the 2017 award, Jennette Chalcraft, was recognized for her impressive work term at Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) and substantial engagements in the library and archives community at UBC and beyond. From her academics to her professionalism and commitment to the community, Jennette’s co-op experience has been defined by excellence – as noted by both the Arts Co-op Program and her ECCC supervisor, Dylan Wood. Indeed, Dylan writes that “Jennette’s interpersonal and analytical skills, attention to detail, professionalism, and work ethic have gone above and beyond my expectations of a graduate student.” With her remarkable achievements in mind, the Arts Co-op Program is pleased to recognize Jennette as MAS/MLIS Co-op Student of the Year.
Through her co-op term at ECCC, Jennette was able to both explore the practical applications of her dual degrees and make an impact in a federal organization. Jennette was hired to propose and develop a new shared drive structure for the Vancouver team of ECCC’s Wildlife Enforcement Directorate, a project that integrated her academic experience and professional interest in records management. This involved a steeper learning curve, particularly as there were no other records management personnel working in the Vancouver team; however, Jennette seized the opportunity to learn from this challenge. Drawing on her MAS experience, she rapidly familiarized herself with the massive ECCC file plan and developed a new user-friendly drive through proactive engagement with staff, partners, and existing tools. Noting and celebrating her proactive persistence, Dylan writes that “Jennette adapted to our unique and potentially intimidating work environment quickly and was able to provide an immediate and accurate analysis of the work she was required to perform.” Jennette’s success was also noted in Ottawa, where according to Dylan her “ability to understand ECCC’s file plan and her confidence in dealing with a variety of challenges were also recognized in national headquarters.”
Beyond her workplace experience, Jennette has also been involved with an impressive array of community activities and organizations. In her own words, Jennette feels this involvement is important “to build connections with faculty, staff, and my fellow students, to give back to UBC in a meaningful way, and to gain experience and be exposed to new ideas outside the classroom.” Jennette’s community commitments during the relevant period included serving on the executive board of UBC’s British Columbia Library Association (BCLA) student chapter, volunteering as the ARMA International representative of the Association of Canadian Archivists at the UBC student chapter (ACA@UBC), and helping to organize the 9th Annual ACA@UBC International Symposium. Through these involvements, Jennette has demonstrated leadership and service to her colleagues. Jennette’s dedication is an inspiration for her colleagues in co-op, iSchool, and the library and archives community beyond.
Jennette’s co-op career has exemplified excellence and commitment, true hallmarks of the Arts Co-op Student of the Year. The adaptability and work ethic she demonstrated at ECCC allowed her to make a substantial contribution to a federal agency, setting an example for her co-op colleagues. As Dylan writes, “Jennette surpassed all expectations placed on her, completing work that required dedication and perseverance, and providing a unique set of knowledge to help address our needs.” Jennette’s community involvement is a further testament to her dedication, perseverance, and leadership. With her professional success and community contributions in mind, the Arts Co-op Program is thrilled to recognize Jennette as 2017 MAS/MLIS Co-op Student of the Year.
