Jenny Ho
2014 Undergraduate Student of the Year
Double Major: Psychology & English Literature
Each year, the Arts Co-op Program recognizes an Arts Co-op Undergraduate student for outstanding achievement in academics, workplace performance, contribution to co-operative education, and extra-curricular activities. This year’s winner, Jenny Ho, was honoured for her work term as a Learning Commons TECwhiz with UBC’s Faculty of Education. Jenny was also recognized for her dedication to the Arts Co-op community through her work with the Arts Co-op Students’ Association (ACSA) and her impressive academic achievements throughout the year.
Excellence in the Workplace
For her second work term, Jenny worked as the Learning Commons TECwhiz in UBC’s Faculty of Education, where she was the first student to hold this position. In this unique role, Jenny was determined to set high standards for both herself and future co-op students assuming this position in terms to come. By all accounts, Jenny succeeded in this mission, as her supervisor, Natasha Boskic, Senior Manager, Learning Design, Education Technology Support, described Jenny as being “innovative and thoughtful”, and said that Jenny “soon became a well-recognized and accessed resource” for the approximately 600 Teacher Candidates enrolled in the Teacher Education program.
As the TECwhiz, Jenny supported students in the Bachelor of Education Program primarily by teaching them how to use UBC Blogs/Wordpress and Collaborative Learning Annotated Systems. She also aided the Teacher Candidates by holding daily drop-in hours, leading workshops, meeting one-on-one with Teacher Candidates, and promoting events and activities through social media. In one notable experience, Jenny presented in front of 300 secondary school Teacher Candidates about ePortfolios, which Jenny credits with drastically improving her public speaking skills.
Along with her stellar work performance, Jenny gave back to the Arts Co-op community throughout the year as Social Media & Promotions Co-Chair for ACSA. In this role, Jenny is responsible for increasing social media presence and designing posters and promotional material for ACSA-related events, among other duties.
Reflecting on her time in the Arts Co-op Program, Jenny believes that it has “greatly influenced [her] academic experiences”, as she is now planning on taking part in the Teacher Education and Counselling Psychology Program at UBC after completing her undergraduate degree in Psychology. She is currently enrolled in prerequisite courses for the Counselling Psychology Program, and looks forward to the possible career paths that lay ahead of her.
