Laura Moberg
Master of Archival Studies and Library and Information Studies
2020/21 UBC iSchool MLIS Co-op Student of the Year, Honourable Mention
Excellence in the Workplace
During her term as a Digital Projects Student Librarian with the UBC Library Digitization Centre, Laura supported the expansion of the BC Historical Newspapers collection, an open access resource of digitized historical community newspapers. Laura’s work involved researching and evaluating newspaper titles that can be included in this collection, which culminated in drafting a project proposal for a next phase of the BC Historical Newspapers project.
One of Laura’s notable accomplishments resulted from her extensive research with BC Archives and other sources, where she was able to identify over 150 newspaper titles that were not yet in the BC Historical Newspapers collection and could be considered for inclusion. This far exceeded the team’s expectations and would provide a wealth of content for multiple future phases of the project.
Community Involvement
Laura is a member of two professional associations: the Association of Canadian Archivists (ACA) and the BC Library Association (BCLA). She contributed to professional knowledge-sharing through the publication of three blog posts, including a Digital Tattoo Project blog post and two posts on the UBC Library Digitization Centre’s Digitizers’ Blog.
Laura’s co-op employer supported the publication of her final co-op work term assignment as a blog post titled, “Expanding the BC Historical Newspapers Collection: Reflections on my Co-op Work Term.” Through this blog post, Laura shared her learnings from her work term with other students and information professionals, promoted the BC Historical Newspapers collection, and drew attention to the work of iSchool co-op students.
Co-op: A Foundation for Future Success
Through her co-op position, Laura feels that she strengthened her ability to pursue research questions, respond creatively and flexibly to problems that arise in the research process, and communicate her findings in a clear and concise manner –– skills that are directly relevant to her studies.
Laura’s coursework in archival, library and information studies aligned very well with her co-op position. She was able to apply course learning around metadata, information retrieval, and information organization by interacting with UBC Library’s Open Collections, navigating library systems and catalogues for her research, and documenting her findings in an organized manner.
Laura affirms that her co-op position as a Digital Projects Student Librarian was an invaluable learning experience that enabled her to develop personally and professionally. Her career goals involve working in hybrid library/archival settings where she can build upon the skills and knowledge she is developing through her MASLIS degree program. Laura feels that her participation in the Arts Co-op Program has contributed greatly to her pursuit of these goals.
