Meghan Radomske
2010 SLAIS Student of the Year (Master of Library and Information Studies)
Each year, the Arts Co-op Program recognizes two SLAIS co-op students for outstanding achievement in all aspects of student performance, including academics, the workplace, and professional and/or community involvement. Meghan Radomske, this year’s Master of Library and Information Studies winner, excelled in all these areas in her position as the Writing & Book Camp Coordinator at the Vancouver Public Library (VPL). Meghan has not only demonstrated a continued commitment to the value of co-operative education through her academic experiences, but her personal statement reflects the ways in which co-op has enhanced her personal and career development; her work at VPL has strengthened her desire to work as a children and young adult Librarian in the future. Her supervisor praises the high quality of Meghan’s work and commends her for exceeding everyone’s goals and expectations. She also continues to develop herself professionally through her extensive involvement in the community as the Co-secretary of British Columbia Library Association’s Young Adult and Children’s Services (YAACS) section, a member of the Vancouver Children’s Literature Roundtable, and the Executive Chair of Friends of the North Vancouver District Public Library.
Excellence in the Workplace
As the Writing & Book Camp Coordinator at VPL, Meghan was responsible for managing all aspects of the camp. Her tasks included communicating with all the individuals involved in the project, advertising, managing the budget, soliciting donations and scholarships, training volunteers, scheduling the groups and various activities, and producing the final Anthology. Throughout all stages of the event planning, her time management and ability to multi-task were crucial to ensure the camp was a success. Meghan’s supervisor, Sophie Middleton, remarks that Meghan’s greatest contribution to the camp “was her ability to innovate, streamline and create efficiencies in the existing processes. She saw areas for improvement in many of our practices and implemented new and better ways to achieve our goals.” An example she gives is the implementation of a pre-registration process to simplify registration on the first day of camp for campers, volunteers and parents.
Meghan has gained a range of skills that will be an asset in her education and chosen career. She learned to manage a $50,000 budget, and organize sponsors, volunteers and campers; meanwhile, she also developed team building skills by creating a positive atmosphere with her co-workers and interacting with a wide range of creative writers, volunteers, staff and Canadian authors. Meghan flourished in this position and made numerous lasting contributions, and has set high standards for future camps.
