Myomi Chu
BA 2004: Major English Literature and Art History
After applying to what felt like a hundred jobs, Myomi Chu says she has definitely become a more proactive and persistent person. Her Co-op experiences, along with her completion of a double major in Art History and English Literature shaped her career goals and helped her determine what she did and did not want to do in her future career.
From re-designing and maintaining the Internal Audit group’s intranet web site with Workers Compensation Board of BC, to promoting visual and performing art programs at Arts Umbrella, Chu’s wide variety of experiences have added to her depth of skills.
Chu is now working at PricewaterhouseCoopers Management Services LP. As a document specialist, Chu “specializes in creating templates, (re)formatting existing documents, and creating charts or diagrams in accordance with [PwC’s] standards.” Her role allows her to “focus on what [she] likes to do best.”
Chu loves the flexibility of her job in terms of creating her own schedule based on the projects she is involved with. Myomi says, “My current position is unique in the firm and is a result of a need for the skills I have to offer in document formatting.”
Chu’s Arts Co-op experience allowed her to gain job search skills, such as resume, cover letter writing and interview skills, which were “invaluable and helped me land a number of jobs.” She adds, “My Co-op work experience also made me more aware of my value in the job market.”
When asked, “What advice do you have for graduating UBC Arts Co-op Students?” Chu said, “The job market is hungry for new graduates so take your pick when it comes to work and make sure the job suits you more than the other way around. You’ll be happier in the long run.”
Chu’s persistence has definitely paid off as she has gained a wide range of skills in art and design from all her different experiences in the Arts Co-op Program. She continues to stretch her boundaries as she is currently taking continuing studies courses towards a certificate in 2D Design at Emily Carr University.
Chu’s Arts Co-op experiences brought her closer to her future career goals of obtaining a career in art and design with a good work and life balance. She encourages students to “enjoy the student life and learn as much as you can from your experiences.”
For students thinking about taking the opportunity to enter the Arts Co-op Program, Chu’s advice is to “take it!”
Chu is determined to keep growing and pushing boundaries in whatever career path she takes. “So long as I’m satisfied, there’s nothing else to worry about.”
