Schyler Edmundson

Master of Public Policy and Global Affairs, 2020
Where did Schyler work?
Work Term: Policy Analyst – Environment and Climate Change Canada (Ottawa), Pan-Canadian Framework for Clean Growth and Climate Change, Programs Directorate
What did Schyler accomplish?
Main Tasks
In her role at Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), Schyler implemented nationwide clean growth initiatives. She worked firsthand on implementing progressive program files in an effort to see through federal strategies for reducing national greenhouse gas emissions under the Paris Agreement.
Major accomplishments
Schyler established formal mechanisms for collaboration between internal teams and created data governance systems for monitoring and reporting on several programs implemented by the department. In addition, she interpreted and applied legislation while working with municipal governments, private businesses, and Indigenous communities to create and manage grant and contribution agreements for projects that reduce Canada’s greenhouse gases in accordance with international commitments.
Most memorable experience
Schyler found that taking initiative and setting up coffee meetings with Directors was “very rewarding”. She particularly enjoyed shadowing the Chief Negotiator for Canada and Director at ECCC for a full day: Schyler sat in on high-level senior meetings with Ambassadors, Ministers, and Directors and was fully immersed in the highest-level of the department’s management. “Having to move to Ottawa in itself was a very memorable experience,” she recalls. “It allowed me to truly experience the culture of the federal government from within the National Capital Region.”
Where is Schyler now and how did Arts Co-op get her there?
Schyler’s co-op experience proved pivotal to starting her career in the Federal Service. Following graduation, the department offered her a full-time, intermediate position as a Policy Analyst in ECCC’s Policy Development Program. She now fulfills this position with the Ottawa team working remotely from Vancouver.
