Shuren Batkhuu

We asked UBC alumna Shuren Batkhuu to share her unique perspectives as an international student in the Arts Co-op Program.
Q: How would you describe your overall experience with the program, and how did the UBC Arts Co-op Program support you as an International Student in your job search and work term?
A: As an alumnus and former international student, I’ll always continue to advocate for the UBC Arts Co-op Program as it played a key role in shaping me into a better student during my time at UBC and a competent member of the workforce immediately after graduation. While it’s true that not all job positions were open to international students, the co-op team did a great job setting expectations, helping me navigate through my options by highlighting key job posting dates, and preparing a new set of practice interview questions for each job application. I also appreciated stories from fellow international students that were shared frequently on the Hub and social platforms.
Q: Were there key learnings from our program that you were able to apply in your career today?
A: Having been through the program, I felt confident preparing job applications and going into interviews as I gained a solid understanding of the process. It was also instilled into my head that I should never self-reject for a position and instead redirect that energy to polishing up my experiences to best relate to the employer’s ideal candidate. Additionally, I continue to benefit from the site visit questions when meeting with my team leads and managers to ensure that I’m recognizing my strengths and areas of growth as I strive to progress in my career.
Q: Do you have any tips for our current International Students on how to land and have a successful co-op experience?
A: Use the resources that you paid for! Your Co-op Career Educator (CCE) is your best friend throughout your co-op journey and they’re there to help you figure it all out as an international student. I think it’s important to recognize that you don’t have to know everything to meet with your CCE as they can help you explore your career interests and give tailored guidance for the international student experience. I’d also emphasize not missing out on jobs based on the job title, since the projects that you work on will have a much stronger impact on your future job interviews. Lastly, remember that you made it to the program for a reason, and know that we’re all rooting for you!
