What did Simran Accomplish?
Western Forest Products
Simran assisted the Talent Acquisition Team by managing over 70 vacancies, conducting 50+ reference checks, and drafting a recruitment policy with a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Additionally, she strengthened mental health resources for colleagues by creating a wellness section in the company newsletter.
UBC Centre for Student Involvement and Careers
As a CSI&C Assistant, Simran provided excellent customer service and support to students, staff, and faculty, which included resolving issues in person, over the phone, and via email. Among her accomplishments, Simran marked and reviewed over 46 proposals for student jobs as part of the UBC Work Learn Program. She also managed the CSI&C LinkedIn page, creating engaging posts that led to a 9% increase in monthly visitors.
Connections Between Work and Studies
Simran’s work experience has helped her understand the needs of students and employees on a micro level. Her experience in HR taught her about the types of support employees need, the positive impact HR has on company culture, and the importance of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to support employee mental well-being.
In her role with UBC CSI&C, Simran developed her active listening and problem-solving skills and observed how various personality types seek support. Her co-op terms helped her connect her studies as a Psychology major to the skills she will need as a future clinician, including observing the principles of motivation, attention, and the impact of stress on work performance.
Benefits After Graduation
Simran’s co-op terms in both private and public sectors have helped her to gain practical work experience, identify the types of work environments she prefers, and make informed choices about her future career. Reflecting on her journey thus far, Simran says, “Co-op has given me the opportunity to critically develop the skills I will need for my Graduate studies and future work prospects.”
