Master of Library and Information Studies
2020/21 UBC iSchool MLIS Co-op Student of the Year
Excellence in the Workplace
In her role with Halifax Public Libraries, Tiffany accomplished many things, including coordinating and leading children’s programs to build literacy and friendship, promoting the summer reading club to 30 classes, and assisting patrons with digital services.
In addition to these regular duties, Tiffany also provided meaningful opportunities for youth mentorship while supervising a large variety of teen library volunteers, helped colleagues develop new technology skills through one-on-one instruction, and contributed her creativity to a regional team developing Play & Learn STEAM Activity Kits.
Tiffany’s achievements were underscored by what her supervisor described as being “extremely adaptable during the constant state of pandemic-related changes” and having a “strong initiative and confident independence by taking the lead to make decisions and get things completed on our tight deadlines.”
Community Involvement
As an active member of the UBC Young Adults and Children’s Services (YAACS), Tiffany serves as the
Co-Chair and Liaison to the BC Library Association (BCLA). To expand her knowledge and network, she has also joined the BCLA, Chinese American Libraries Association (CALA), BCLA Mentorship Program, Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility Safe Space (IDEAS) Mentorship Program, and Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (BIPOC) in Libraries Support Group. Co-op enhanced Tiffany’s networking skills, which she was able to put into practice and connect with professionals and build meaningful relationships.
Co-op: A Foundation for Future Success
Tiffany states that she is “eternally grateful” for the co-op experience that gave her the chance to work in youth services at Halifax Public Libraries and confirm her professional aspirations to work with children and families in libraries.
Tiffany is glad to have been able to enjoy every day at work, connect with patrons, and learn from experienced co-workers. She believes, “By applying my education, the co-op program became pivotal for my personal, academic, and professional growth and paved a way for my subsequent work experiences.”
